Fragrance, Beauty & Emotion; How Are They Connected?

Yes, fragrance cannot be seen, touched, or properly explained in words and yet, it is one of the most admired things about you. It can leave a lasting impression, it can hold memories within, and it has the power to make you feel happy, sad, or even angry.

You use all those skin-glowing, skin-brightening, or skin-whitening products, you even put on some classy glasses & bright lipsticks, but guess what? People forget how you looked, they forget what you wore, they even forget what skin-brightening-glowing-product you used, but what gets registered in their subconscious mind is how you smelled. The Fragrance or the scent you wear, establishes a place in people’s mind and stays there for days, months, and even years.

Fragrance, beauty & emotions are intertwined and each plays a significant role of its own by influencing our perception, mood and our experiences.

Fragrance has a powerful impact on our emotions and can evoke a wide range of feelings and memories. For instance, fragrance of lavender can make you feel relaxed and provide a sense of relief from stress, while citrus on the other hand, can boost your energy and mood and floral on the other hand, can evoke feelings of romance and happiness.

When you unwrap and open a personal care product, for instance a body lotion or body mist, you realize how good it smells, but what most people don’t realize is, the reason why those certain products smell how they smell and why that fragrance is there in the first place. Is it only there to enhance customer experience?

No, fragrances have meanings. These fragrances have the power to evoke emotions, so the fragrance that is there in your personal care product is not simply to enhance your experience, but also a strategy of a brand to build a psychological connection with you, so that when you get in touch with that fragrance again, it can ring a bell, it can remind you of that product and the brand it belongs to. More importantly, fragrance are added to give personality to the product and worn to communicate a vibe.

Below I’ve listed down the most common fragrances and provided a brief of what each of them mean or communicate, however there is possibility that you may not be able connect with one of the meanings, why? Because of the cultural context and differences. It’s a bit challenging to put fragrances into words, but I’ve given it a shot. Hope it gets the job done.

Fragrances are generic, they serve as a form of self-expression and convey different messages depending on the occasion and wearer’s personal choice. What a fragrance communicates at one occasion, may not communicate the same at another, what a fragrance means to a certain person, may not mean the same to another and what emotion a fragrance evokes for one person may not evoke the same emotion for the other. Therefore, it’s important to take into consideration your own preference & choice when picking out a fragrance, rather than simply stealing it from others.
