Positive Thinking: What does it look like?

What comes to your mind when you try to picture Positive Thinking? A Smiling Face, Cheerful Attitude, or Simply Calmness & Patience After Setbacks? Actually, this is how positivity is usually perceived by most of us. This is how we identify a happy person and this is exactly how we correlate happiness and positivity by one another. But is this really the case?

All these words mentioned above are synonymously used for Positivity Thinking and Happiness. But there’s more to it. Positivity is not simply about smiling all the time, it’s also not only about putting on a cheerful face, and neither it’s only about being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel every time, but that is just how it is perceived most of us.

However, apart from a commonly accepted outlook on Positivity & Positive Thinking shared above, positivity is also about feeling sad when you are hurt by something said by one of your peers, family members or colleagues, but not let those feelings reside there. Positivity is also about feeling helpless when we are not able to help the people we love, but eventually accepting the fact that not everything is in our control.

Furthermore, positivity is not always genetic or inherited, it’s not always natural or a built-in feature. Positivity is mindset that can be bult, developed or worked upon. It is something you can practice daily and keep getting good at it, just like any other skill or craft.

How can you identify these people? And what if you are also one in the Positivity List? Wouldn’t that be great! Let’s look closer at their few easily spottable behavioral characteristics.

They smile often, not only for sake of smiling, but it’s just who they are. When you see such a smiling face, congratulations, you got them. You’ll recognize this genuine smile instantly. You’ll just know. it’s easily spottable.

Well, smiling is one, but these people are also very friendly and they don’t appear friendly, because they have an ulterior motive to be friendly, they just simply are. They may not seem approachable at first, but once interacted, you’ll find them affable.

Because of their friendly nature, you’ll find yourself getting comfortable with no efforts of your own. It’ll be as smooth as pulling out a hair from a dough. When you are around them, you’ll find yourself smiling, talking about stuff that you usually won’t talk about and more importantly, you’ll feel accepted.

This is one of most important and rare characteristics that you’ll find in these people. They are as real as time itself. Noting they do is to get people’s attention, to fit in, be accepted or even to leave a desired impression on you. They are just doing it because, it’s who they are. These thoughts of fitting in, creating impression and blah blah, don’t not even cross their mind.

Boyyy…, are they fair & unbiased in everything they do! It’s easier to be fair and just when the outcome does not affect you in any way or even it does, it’s of a low magnitude. These people are fair in everything they do, even in stuff as basic as sharing a cookie by breaking it into two equal parts (Assuming, both equally paid for it).

Do you know what makes them feel content, what keeps them happy and what motivates them? You guessed it right, it’s their growth mindset, continuous learning and being better than yesterday. Learning is what they feed on, and this is what keeps their mind healthy and strong.

Ask them what are up to these days and there will be expected one of the two answers to your question; I’m exploring through stuff that I can learn or I’m learning to do X or Y. Also, what they are learning does not have to be aligned with their career goal, or has to be something relevant to their field. It could be anything that’s making them happy at the moment. The future finds relevance when the time is right, it’s what they believe in.

Because of their love for continuous learning about interdisciplinary fields, and that quickness in accepting what they don’t know, they often find themselves surrounded by more opportunities to learn and grow. Also, since they keep learning stuff which may seem irrelevant in current situation, it eventually what makes them appear as the-all-knowing, more knowledgeable and confident.

Knowing all these characteristics of Positive Thinking is good, but being able to understand what positivity means, what it actually looks like, and how it is misunderstood by most people, can really help you build a positive mindset, make your life easy and help you survive situations you never imagined you could. So, don’t simply go with the trend and don’t limit yourself to this list, because we all are unique and we all have those unique characteristics which signifies our positive outlook towards life.
